DCAS Bronx Criminal Courthouse

Electrical Infrastructure Upgrade

Performed comprehensive electrical infrastructure upgrade services for the Bronx Family-Criminal Courthouse at 215 East 161st Street for NYC DCAS, supporting a continuously operating 24/7 courthouse facility. Scope included demolition and replacement of existing generator and switchgear systems, installation and rigging of a 1500 kW emergency standby generator to the roof of the 13-story courthouse structure, service bus installation, switchgear and distribution equipment upgrades, automatic transfer switch systems, emergency and normal power risers, MI cable installations, feeder rerouting, MCC and panel installations, fire alarm wiring, load bank installation, temporary power systems, testing and commissioning, and phased coordination to maintain uninterrupted courthouse operations.

Understanding the Site and Challenges

Kanta Electric performed a major electrical infrastructure upgrade for the Bronx Family-Criminal Courthouse at 215 East 161st Street for NYC DCAS, supporting one of New York City’s most operationally sensitive public facilities. The courthouse houses critical justice and public safety operations, including Family Court, Criminal Court, District Attorney, Probation, Human Resources, Corrections, and NYPD functions, requiring electrical infrastructure work to be carefully coordinated around continuous 24/7 building operations. The large-scale civic facility spans approximately 13 stories and more than 600,000 square feet within the Bronx Civic Center complex. A defining component of the project was the installation and rigging of a 1500 kW emergency standby generator to the roof of the 13-story courthouse structure, requiring specialized engineering coordination, complex urban rigging logistics, phased shutdown sequencing, and integration of mission-critical emergency power infrastructure serving an active courthouse environment.

Kanta’s scope included demolition and replacement of existing generator and switchgear systems, service bus installation, switchgear and distribution equipment upgrades, automatic transfer switch systems, emergency and normal power risers, MI cable systems, MCC and panel installations, feeder rerouting, fire alarm wiring, load bank installation, temporary power systems, and extensive testing and commissioning activities.

Providing Innovative, Long-standing Solutions

The project required substantial vertical electrical infrastructure integration throughout basement, riser, mechanical, and roof-level pathways, including extensive conduit systems, copper feeder infrastructure, armored MI cable systems, emergency distribution pathways, and high-capacity switchgear coordination within a continuously occupied civic facility. Executed within a highly secure and operationally sensitive environment, the project demanded careful sequencing, temporary power coordination, phased system cutovers, and uninterrupted support of critical courthouse operations and life-safety systems throughout construction activities.

This project highlights Kanta Electric’s experience delivering mission-critical public-sector electrical infrastructure upgrades within complex occupied facilities where operational continuity, emergency power resiliency, large-scale electrical distribution systems, and advanced coordination are paramount.
