Lexington Avenue Armory National Guard Readiness Center
Updating Fully Integrated Infrastructure
Historic armory modernization project where Kanta is delivering a fully integrated electrical and lighting infrastructure within an active National Guard Readiness Center. The scope includes new switchboards, panelboards, safety switches, and coordinated overcurrent protection systems, along with mission-critical backup power supported by a double-conversion UPS system and automatic transfer switching. The project also incorporates advanced lighting controls, EV charging infrastructure, and full restoration and replication of historic lighting fixtures, requiring precise integration of modern electrical systems within a landmark structure. The work highlights Kanta’s ability to execute complex, code-driven infrastructure upgrades in historically sensitive and operationally critical environments.
Responding to Critical Power Emergencies
Kanta is serving as the electrical contractor for the renovation and modernization of the Lexington Avenue Armory, a historic State Armory facility being upgraded to support National Guard Readiness operations under the New York State Office of General Services (OGS).
This project involves the comprehensive integration of new electrical infrastructure within a landmark building, requiring a balance between preservation of historic architectural elements and the deployment of modern, high-performance systems. The scope includes installation of new switchboards, panelboards, safety switches, and coordinated overcurrent protection systems, designed to meet stringent NEC and NFPA requirements and ensure long-term operational reliability.
Understanding the Site and Challenges
A key component of the project is the delivery of a mission-critical backup power architecture, including a three-phase, double-conversion uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system capable of continuous operation and seamless transition during utility interruptions, paired with automatic transfer switches engineered to detect power loss and transfer loads to emergency sources within seconds . This infrastructure ensures uninterrupted operation of critical building systems supporting National Guard readiness functions.
The project also includes advanced electrical distribution and device-level coordination, including heavy-duty safety switches with high interrupting capacity and coordinated fuse protection systems designed for reliability under fault conditions . Additional scope includes energy-efficient interior and exterior lighting systems, automatic lighting controls, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support future-ready facility operations.
A defining feature of this project is the restoration and replication of historic lighting fixtures throughout the Armory. This work requires detailed study, disassembly, refurbishment, and reinstallation of existing chandeliers, as well as fabrication of historically accurate replicas based on archival documentation, all while ensuring compliance with modern electrical and life-safety codes . The integration of these restored elements with new electrical systems demands a high level of coordination across trades and disciplines.
Execution of the project requires careful sequencing, coordination within an occupied and operational facility, and strict adherence to public-sector standards and historic preservation requirements. The work reflects Kanta’s expertise in delivering technically complex electrical systems within sensitive, high-profile environments, combining modern infrastructure performance with preservation of historic character.
